Kirby - Our new dog!

For those of you who haven’t heard yet, Jeff and I recently adopted a Jack Russell Terrier, who was appropriately named “Jack”! We saw his picture on Petfinder.com and went to Dublin to meet him. He was a crazy little guy - whining and barking and pacing back and forth in his kennel. Jeff and I were both a little apprehensive, we didn’t want a hyper dog, but we took him out in the yard to meet him properly. He was still crazy - running all over and peeing on everything! Then Jeff threw the ball for him and he brought it right back, dropped it and waited for another toss! That was all Jeff needed to know and he told me it was now my decision! Well, those of you who know me know that I will never pass up a chance to take a dog home - and so I signed the papers and Jeff paid the money and “Jack” was ours! Jeff was still a little concerned that we, more like I, made the decision to hastily - but, it all turned out great in the end!

We had to wait almost a whole week before bringing our new little buddy home because he still needed to get neutered and the vet was all booked up until the next Thursday! During our wait we came up with a new name for him: “Kirby”. (If he had responded to the name of Jack, we would have kept it, but he didn’t.) We went through lots of dog names and I started naming video game characters that had a lot of energy (i.e. Crash Bandikoot, Sonic the Hedgehog, etc..). Nothing was sounding right until Jeff came up with Kirby - also a video game character, but not one with a lot of energy, oh well!

So, we’ve had Kirby for a little over 2 weeks now and he’s feeling right at home! He sleeps under the covers in bed with us at night; he and our other dog Sophie love to wrestle together and chase each other through the yard; and his favorite game with us humans is tug-of-war (which he wants to play often!). I’ve already signed him up for doggy basic training and his first class will be tomorrow. He’s a really fast learner, so I’m sure class will go well - but, I’ll keep you updated! And as far as his hyper Jack Russell energy goes - two walks a day and some play time with Sophie takes care of it!

We did have one incident with the Wacko (our white duck) - I let my guard down since Kirby didn’t seem very interested in the ducks or chickens and I left the dogs outside by themselves for a while. When I went out to check on them Kirby and Sophie had poor Wacko pinned down and were pulling out his feathers and biting him! Luckily I caught them in time and with some special care and cleaning from Jeff and I it looks like Wacko’s going to be okay! I’ll keep you updated on that as well
